The main sequence of training at Ōkami Dō follows the training held several times a week on Okinawa at the Meibukan Hombu Dōjō (本部道場, “head” or “home Dōjō”): traditional Okinawan karate in the Meibukan Gōjū-Ryū style with basics (Kihon), kata, partner drills and strength and body training.
Training at Ōkami Dō
- Karate modelled on the Hombu Dōjō: The structure and content of the classes follow the Meibukan on Okinawa (see Meibukan Gōjū-Ryū).
- Break-falling and close-range fighting: In addition, break-falling (Ukemi) and basic aspects of throwing, joint locks and groundwork are practised.
- Kobudō: Training also covers the handling of traditional weapons (see Kobudō).
- HAPV as background: The applications follow the theory of “Habitual Acts of Physical Violence” (see Koryū Uchinadi and HAPV). Practice begins slowly and with control; speed is increased step by step to real speed.
- Swordsmanship: There is an opportunity to learn swordsmanship.
- Sparring: Suitable protective equipment is available for sparring with and without weapons.
- Philosophy and talks: Training includes discussions on philosophy and talks on various topics (see Philosophy in the library).
